Ryedale in North Yorkshire has the largest range of adventurous activities in Northern England. With over 1,400 miles (almost 2,300 km) of paths and tracks to choose from this wonderful corner of North Yorkshire is overflowing with opportunities for walking, cycling and horse riding. The only potential problem is knowing where to begin! A visit to the area can satisfy those people craving something a little different in their lives or even kick start a new hobby.

Ryedale Hot Air BallooningActive Pursuits
If you enjoy active pursuits the breathtaking scenery in Ryedale is a perfect backdrop for walking, cycling and a horse riding. Two National Trails, the Cleveland Way and the Yorkshire Wolds Way provide superb long distance walking and if you are really in for a challenge, you'll find the North Sea Trail and the North Sea Cycle Route here too.  Our great golf courses, our rivers and lakes to fish and our windsports centre provide you with abundant opportunities to get fit or relax.

The beautiful open countryside not only offers endless opportunities for exhilarating walks but you'll find superb mountain biking facilities, great water sports, horse riding, gliding and rock climbing

Dalby Forest lies in the heart of the Moors and its new cycle routes make it popular for family cyclists and those in search of extreme or challenging routes.

The North York Moors makes excellent cycling country and the new Moor to Sea Cycle Route is a great way to explore the area whether you want to cycle it in easy stages or make it a superb cycling holiday.

Discover Moor to Sea
Linking Pickering, Whitby and Scarborough the Moor to Sea Cycle Route crosses the North York Moors National Park. It runs along forest tracks, green lanes, minor roads and disused railway lines. The route can be started at any point and cycle hire facilities can be found in Dalby Forest.

Extend your Day
Activity does not have to stop with the setting of the sun. In Dalby Forest, star watching events, suitable for families, take place throughout the autumn and winter months.

Tee-Off
With golf courses at Malton and Kirkbymoorside, and a championship course at Ganton, there are fairways for all abilities. For the less serious, 9 hole courses offer a great alternative.

Discover an Industrial Heritage
It's hard to imagine that the quiet village of Rosedale Abbey was once a 19th century boom town. So valued was the ironstone found there that a railway line was built to export it to County Durham. Walks along the disused track around Rosedale and Blakey take you past kilns, railway cottages and evidence of the old mines, all set within stunning scenery. Further information about moorland industries can be found at Ryedale Folk Museum where a glass furnace from 1572 can be seen.

Ryedale Walking Dalby ForestTrack Down a Trail
Take up a long distance challenge and feel the benefit for body and soul. The Cleveland Way National Trail and the Yorkshire Wolds National Trail take you through miles of breathtaking scenery and peaceful countryside.

Make a Splash
The whole family can enjoy a range of sporting activities at Ryedale Sports Centre in Pickering. Swimming pools are run by Everyone Active at Pickering and Norton.

Come across Giants
Along the steep valley of Bridestone Griff stand fourteen eerie, naturally eroded stone giants. These Jurassic outcrops, the Bridestones, can be reached from a variety of paths from Staindale in Dalby Forest.

Make a Catch
Cast a line at any one of the numerous well stocked lakes and rivers across the district. Fly fishing and course fishing are readily available. River fishing tickets and tackle hire facilities can be found at many places.

Myths and Monsters
Costumed guides lead walks around the grounds at Castle Howard, bringing the history and environment alive for the family. Take a guided tour and discover the secrets of Castle Howard's enchanted woods and the stories behind the statues of mythical creatures found in the gardens.

Horse Riding in North York Moors and Howardian Hills
The North York Moors offers some of the best horse riding terrain in the country. As well as over 500 miles of bridleways, there are cross-country tracks, riding schools and trekking centres, and two promoted long distance trails. The Newtondale Horse Trail is signposted and takes the rider through forest tracks, rolling fields and open moorland between the towns of Pickering and Grosmont. The BHS Heritage Ride is a 350-mile ride which starts in Lincolnshire and finishes in the seaside town of Whitby, on which you get to ride some of our area's most stunning countryside. Whether you have a horse or not, you won't be disappointed if you come riding with us! Saddle up and enjoy Ryedale's wonderful scenery. Riding horseback gets you closer to nature. Stables at Sinnington, Hawnby, Helmsley & Snainton offer riding for beginners and experts. Alternatively bring your own horse and stay at one of the many bed and breakfast establishments in the area that also provide stabling for your four legged friend.  For more information on Horse Riding in Ryedale and wider North Yorkshire visit http://www.rideyorkshire.org.

If you want to try something completely different why not view the area from the air during a trial gliding lesson.  Yorkshire Gliding Club provides this unique opportunity enabling you to cruise above the North York Moors National Park and the Vale of York whilst taking in the breath taking scenery.

Rievaulx Terrace and Temples were originally developed as a picnic site and offer stunning views. Alternatively Nunnington Hall provides the perfect Elizabethan backdrop.  For alternative picnic spots visit our Picnic Spots in Ryedale page.
