Lots in store at Ryedale Book Festival 2017!

We've launched our line-up for Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd September with an impressive programme of diverse literary events for a range of readers, from history buffs and animal lovers to petrol heads and armchair travellers.

Learn about the Nine Days Queen, Lady Jane Grey, from historian Leanda de Lisle, accompanied by musician Chris Parsons of Eboracum Baroque. Then, leap from the Tudor court to the Regency era with ‘Austentatious’, an improvised comedy play starring some of the country’s quickest comic performers who will conjure up a brand new ‘lost’ Jane Austen novel based on audience suggestions. Keeping things firmly historical, Val Wood will also be taking the audience on a tour of her books and the process of writing historical fiction.

Hear the remarkable true tale of a special cat named Felix, the ‘Senior Pest Controller’ at Huddersfield Train Station. Then, from trains to automobiles, join car journalist and author Johnny Tipler for a glass of something suitably F1 as he shares his passion for all things fast and four-wheeled.

Horse-racing fans are in for a treat with the chance to meet international bestselling author Felix Francis, son of steeplechase jockey Dick Francis, at a special event held at Jack Berry House. Join Felix in a celebration of his latest thriller, 'Pulse', and then Jack Berry House invites you to join a short tour of its rehabilitation facilities for injured jockeys. Proceeds from this event will be shared with Jack Berry House.

Award-winning BBC producer and travel journalist Adrian Mourby explores the places great works of literature first saw the light of day. Join him for a cream tea at the Talbot Hotel as he follows his literary heroes around the world. Then two bestselling authors, Gail Honeyman and Susie Steiner, will be discussing the literary heroine – should she be cute and easy, or anti-social, lonely and real?

The festival concludes with a ‘stellar’ event - a spellbinding account of the first flight of the Colombia Space Shuttle with author, Rowland White who has pieced together the dramatic untold story of the mission for the first time.

As always, there will be plenty for children and younger readers too – lots of stories, crafts and another chance to meet festival favourite and new Children's Laureate(!), Charlie and Lola creator Lauren Child!
